The Basics of COVID-19: How It Spreads and What You Can Do

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

With over 20% of the global population under virtual lockdown to stem the spread of COVID-19, coupled with the nearly 19,000 deaths as a result of the virus, it has become devastatingly clear that drastic efforts must be taken, not just by government officials, but by every single person to reduce the impacts of this year’s coronavirus.

Let’s first understand how COVID-19 spreads.

The most recent update on COVID-19 from the CDC explains that the virus is primarily spread through person-to-person contact, notably, in which people who are in close proximity to one another share bodily fluids produced from a cough or sneeze that are then inhaled into the lungs. Furthermore, COVID-19 can be contracted through touching a surface that has the virus on it and then touching one’s face, specifically the areas around the eyes, nose, and mouth. It is believed that the most contagious people are the most symptomatic, but those who are asymptomatic can still carry and transmit the virus. It is important to realize that every single person, no matter their race, ethnicity, or age, is susceptible to this virus.

What you can do to help.

  • Practice Social Distancing

In increasing the physical space between you and another individual, you reduce the chance of contracting COVID-19. Currently, it is recommended that individuals stay at least six feet apart. We can practice social distancing by staying indoors unless absolutely necessary, and when out in public, abiding by the 6 feet recommendation.

  • Don’t Panic Buy

Purchase only what you need. Buying a year’s supply of a product like toilet paper only serves to clear shelves and leave the majority of shoppers empty handed. We are all in this together, so be mindful of how much you buy. Stores will restock.

  • Practice Good Hygiene

Consistently washing your hands and sanitizing surfaces reduces the chance of contracting the coronavirus. To better understand why, learn how soap works here.
